A multi-center study published in 2019 by the American Journal of Psychiatry confirmed the treatment’s efficacy, concluding that focusing brain stimulation on “the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex significantly improved OCD symptoms.”
The 2019 study concluded that after six weeks of treatment, there was a statistically significant improvement in OCD symptoms for the study’s active treatment group when compared to the placebo group. The study also found the improvement was maintained at least one month after the treatment’s end, at week 10.
Most people start to see some changes within the first couple of weeks. For some, it may take a little longer. When you’ve been living with OCD for a long time, it can sometimes be difficult to recognize when changes occur, especially when they happen gradually.
You might notice that you’re having fewer intrusive thoughts, and those thoughts are less distressing to you. Or you might notice your urges to engage in compulsive behavior are less frequent, and not as strong.
Even though TMS has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of OCD, insurance has not widely started covering treatment. We hope this will be changed soon and your insurance begins covering OCD treatment.
